All springs of action gone, all confidence gone. I don’t see that I’m likely ever to be any good at anything. I don’t feel I can tackle any new situation, or even any old one… I have been in the past ambitious, not, I think, for power, nor for money, to be creating perhaps. I’ve wanted a bit of fame, or at least encouragement; I’ve wanted that more because of being a woman than for myself – something to break the myth of feminine inferiority. Above all, I think, I have wanted my values to be accepted. I have lived in loyalty to them; the values of the clerk – truth above all, reason as opposed to passion… Now I am left completely useless and valueless. That’s defeatism, but I know my values are defeated, whatever happens.44
